World Diabetes Day
Good craic.
November 14th is an important date for many reasons. It's the birthday of Former King of Jordan, Hussein bin Talal, actress Olga Kurylenko, and Brendan Gleeson's son, Brian Gleeson. Remember when he shot himself by mistake in Love Hate? Muppet.
November 14th is also World Diabetes Day. The official colour of diabetes awareness is blue. I wore blue on the day I was diagnosed with #T1D. It was a sky blue River Island sweater. A nice one, too. Which is unfortunate because my GP ripped it apart after I had gone into DKA. I thought that was OTT, but I couldn't string a sentence together to protest. The mouth was like sandpaper. Zero saliva. Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a medical emergency that happens when a lack of insulin causes harmful substances called ketones to build up in the blood. This is, unfortunately, the first time some people will realise they have diabetes. If you know the symptoms, you can catch it earlier so it doesn't escalate to DKA. When the doc saw me, he knew I was in a spot of bother. He wasted no time, unnecessarily tearing the sweater in two, exposing my arms to get the IV fluids in.
The hydration was A1, Sharon, but inside, I was fuming for two reasons. First of all, why did I have to be wearing River Island on this faithful day? Why not a counterfeit sweater from the stalls downtown or one of those Penneys ones made in Bangladesh with Idaho or Arkansas plastered over it? Secondly, the very doctor who ruined my lovely sweater had misdiagnosed me a few days earlier - said I had a throat infection. Muppet.
Anyways, these were my symptoms: severe dehydration leading to dry/sandpaper mouth, excessive thirst, frequent urination, weight loss, black eyes, morbidly pale... well, paler.
Keep them in mind. And if you're experiencing the symptoms of diabetes you should seek medical attention immediately, but not without changing into cheaper, unremarkable clothing first.
